Description
Mission: To encourage the personal and social growth of our singers and inspire our community through impactful performances and music education.
Vision: To sing, to build community, to change lives.
Values: Artistry, Ecellence, Dedication, Teamwork, Integrity, Kindness, Inclusiveness
Rainier Youth Choirs was founded in 2007 by Artistic Director, Leora Schwitters, as a youth offering under the adult Kent community ensemble, the Rainier Chorale, and gained independent 501(c)3 non-profit status in 2019.
RYC offers an exceptional, affordable and family-friendly youth program that fosters teamwork, self-discipline, accomplishment and pride.
RYC's grade-level choirs rehearse weekly on Monday nights September through June at Cedar Heights Middle School in Covington, WA and present two 'main-stage' seasonal concerts in December and May at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Kent. Additional opportunities include various community performances, retreats, festivals, and local and extended tours.
Rainier Youth Choirs is a community-based organization with no religious affiliation. Members come from Auburn, Burien, Covington, Des Moines, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Issaquah, Kent, Maple Valley, Puyallup, Renton, Snoqualmie, and Sumner, with no restrictions. It is a tuition-based music performance and education program for children and youth emphasizing the development of high caliber musical skills and outstanding artistic performances so as to inspire, enrich, and transform the lives of children. Partial scholarships are available and new members are accepted each fall and January.
RYC's highly qualified instructors, all with advanced degrees and many years of choral directing experience, deliver artistic, inspirational and enjoyable music instruction and choral performances. Professional level instrumentalists assist in rehearsals and in performances.
Travel is an expected part of the curriculum and not covered by tuition. These opportunities are often life changing and greatly enrich each singer and ensemble. Younger groups: one to two days, local tour or festival. Older groups travel farther and longer. Previous destinations have included Oregon, New Orleans, Hawaii, and New York City. NYC’s Carnegie Hall was the cancelled destination for 2020. RYC’s first international tour was to Ireland in 2017. Colla Voce and Consonare will attend the San Diego Youth Choir Festival, June 27-July 3, 2024.
